Mike Walsh – Little One
Well who ever knew that Mike Walsh, the King Of Daytime TV in the 70's & 80's , actually could hold a tune, despite his own protestations to the contrary. And he made that perfectly clear on his TV Show.
Even more of a surprise was that more than that, he actually could SING, & not just talk/sing the lyrics like other Radio DJ's (which he was at the time) & TV personalities from Graham Kennedy & his offsider Bert (Herbie) to Number 96's Abigail & Division 4's Gerard Kennedy...all usually performing hackneyed old standard.
Here Mike had a pretty good song, not the great lost Aussie record but a well produced big ballad with the host hitting several high notes on this Johnny Young written & produced 1971 single "Little One". It didn't chart, probably becuse of Mike's ties to a Sydney radio station at the time which would have prevented other stations playing & promoting it
I found this on an old LOL called "Antipodean Atrocities" which contained many absolute shockers..this wasn't one & it certainly deserved a better fate than that.

Mary Jane Boyd - The Man I Love
Переглядів 2,9 тис.2 роки тому
Mary Jane Boyd was one of the most popular Australian female singers from the time she was a 19 year old teenager as a regular on The Barry Crocker Show in 1969 & throughout the 70's into the 80's. The owner of a stunning voice ideal for jazz & blues classics & the R & B she preferred, but didn't always get to sing, she was also in demand to sing on other television shows. They included Bandsta...
Alan Dale & The Houserockers _Crackin' Up
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 роки тому
Along with Johnny O'Keefe, Alan Dale was one of the original pioneers of Aussie rock 'n' roll back in the mid-late 50s, who's career achievements need to be motre publicly acknowledged. Alan had started out in 1951 as a big band singer until he saw Bill Haley performing Rock Around the Cark. It wasn't long before he formed Australia's first Rock & Roll band The Houserockers, and started the ver...
Maximum Load - Riding Through The Dandenong Ranges
Переглядів 9492 роки тому
A bit of Aussie culcha LOL...especially for those who lived in Melbourne in the early 70s. Maximum Load were an odd band, playing everything from novelties like this & their own originals to current pop/rock hits & old jazz and blues standards featuring Scottish born June Smith & her husband of many decades Lew Smith. June was the possessor of a big, blueswailing voice & after the pair moved to...
Renee Geyer The Restless Years
Переглядів 4,6 тис.3 роки тому
To mark the incredible Renee Geyer's 67th Birthday as well as the start of her 50th Anniversary celebrations in the music biz, here's the theme song to the late 70's teen soap The Restless Years. It may not be a classic, but Renee still sings the hell out of it and was one of her bona fide Top 40 hits (as high as #14 in Sydney) . And yet while other songs that missed and album tracks have gone ...
Bulldog - Man Of Constant Sorrow
Переглядів 2,4 тис.4 роки тому
An excellent band arrangement of this old Traditional folk song, "Man Of Constant Sorrow"was a one off single by this short lived Aussie progressive rock/power trio. Bulldog was formed by Singer/Lead Guitarist Mick Rogers, with Bob Dames (ex-The Purple Hearts) on bass & drummer Peter Miles (ex-Bay City Union). They played a few gigs but before they could get established & promote the record, Mi...

The Soundbenders were a popular Adelaide band of the late 60's who released 2 singles for Festival in 1968/69 which did moderately well in their home state. The band at the time of the recordings consisted of Bob Woods (vocals), Jane Palmer (Lead Guitar), Kevin Date (bass) & Ralph Linde (drums). Later members in the 70's included David Hyde (Vocals), Steve Griffin (Guitar) his brother Mike Grif...
Mark IV - It's For You
Переглядів 1,3 тис.5 років тому
Popular Perth band Mark IV (not to be confused with many overseas bands with the same name) had just one single release to their name, but that one single became a double sided hit in their hometown, with both sides reaching #10. This heavy reworking of "It's For You" on the B side of "Groove With What You’ve Got" had been written by Lennon & McCartney for Cilla Black in 1964 as a follow up to ...

Following a couple of years out of the Aussie limelight while Marcie & The Cookies spent time in the UK, backing Cliff Richard & others on tour and record, Marcie Jones, now solo again, returned to Australia in 1973 with this outstanding first single from Marcie's first ever album, the also excellent "That Girl Jones". Our original Soul queen since the mid 60's when she was belting out Motown c...
The Tallifer Group - This Happiness Feeling
Переглядів 1,1 тис.5 років тому
A terrific psych/folk single by little known Aussie band The Tallifer Group. This 45/single "This Happiness Feeling / Fansifrea" was the only recorded evidence of the band, and was released in October 1968. Both sides were written by T.R. Brinstead so one could reasonably assume he was a member of the band but playing what instrument is unknown. Also the record was produced by June Productions ...
City Stompers - Times Like This

I can't find much information on the City Slickers but this Melbourne band existed, with various line-up changes from 1966-1970 & this was the first of 2 singles the Melbourne band released in 1968/69. It was written by the band's keyboard player Mike Carmody with the record's producer Russ Dickenson & reached #28 in Melbourne, charting for 4 weeks in June 1968. Prior to joining City Slickers t...

Denise (aka Deniese) Morrison has had a long, successful career in Australian Country music since first being discovered at Tamworth by Ron Tudor who signed the teenager to a record contract with his Fable Record label. One of the highlights of Captain Matchbox's 1975 release "Australia" this track closed the album, with the legendary Aussie band's inimitable absurdist sense of humour & jugband/blues style applied to the tale of "Sweeney Todd The Barber" . One of our most renowned & respected engineers John French, who recorded the album, recalled that for this track, "we spent days recording the sound effects...

I was there that night, and yes I realise that if everyone who claimed to be there was, then the Palais Theatre in St Kilda would need to be the size of a large suburb. But nonetheless I was there about halfway bay on the aisle to the left. It was an amazing night where the cream of Australian music came together in tribute to one who was gone too early.

I found this band back in early 1970s because of the Brian Cadd and Bootleg connection and was really expecting them to take off but sadly it didn't happen. They had a good sound to them (and can't go wrong with Phil Manning).

As a major fan of Tyrannosaurus Rex / T. Rex of course I know of John Peel so please don't make assumptions.. perhaps you didn't know how he championed them before they became T. Rex. As for those punk bands I make no excuse for not liking them. Tuneless & disposable, utterly devoid of any musical ability with monotone snarls instead of voices. However like any music there were exceptions. For me it was Patti Smith who I loved & Television who could play. So we'll have to beg to differ I'm afraid

The self-indulgent, big, long, drawn out Guitar endings to early 70's Rock songs is another major reason for The Punk n New Wave movements coming into existence. Fresh, vibrant, concise and succinct Rock music that delivered exciting energy. I remember the first times that I heard The Saints, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, Radio Birdman, The Jam, The Dictators, etc. Have a listen to "Stay with Me" by The Dictators for some genuine Guitar Rock. The waves of emotions that spread through my adolescent body were exhilarating. "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones is a fantastic Rock song from 1978. John Peel is known to have repeatedly stated "Teenage Kicks" to be his all-time favourite song, from 1978 until his death in 2004. If you don't know who John Peel was, then shame on your ignorance.
